Whangārei, New Zealand
Floor Area: 900m²
The restoration of Whangārei's fire-damaged Old Municipal Building, returning a CBD landmark to use as modern, multi-tenant offices.
A 2019 fire damaged the upper floor and the clock tower of the Old Municipal Building, one of Whangārei's most recognisable heritage buildings. ARCO partnered with Whangārei District Council, from early stages through to completion, to bring it back.
The brief balanced modern office space for two new occupants with the building's heritage character. The ground floor was restored true to the original build, keeping the surviving heritage doors, windows and architectural features, while Level 1 became contemporary workspace. A new lift extension, new roof structure and internal gutters, and new carparking at the rear complete the project.
