The redevelopment of the Hihiaua Cultural Centre in Whangārei, including a refurbished boatshed and a new purpose-built waka store.
ARCO won the tender to work with the Hihiaua Cultural Centre's trustees, Moller Architects and RS Eng on turning the existing boatshed into a facility built for the centre's new direction as a cultural tourism destination, where visitors can join the team on site.
The boatshed was reclad and reroofed, with a new mezzanine for offices and a lunchroom, viewing platforms and a full internal refurbishment. Alongside it, we built a new steel portal-framed waka store for building and housing the waka crafted in Whangārei, linked to the boatshed by new canopies and walkways with sliding screen walls.
