Tūtūkākā Coast, New Zealand
Floor Area: 1,100m²
A two-storey, 1,100m² classroom block for Ngunguru School, built for the Ministry of Education to meet a growing local roll.
Founded in 1870, Ngunguru School looks out over the Ngunguru Estuary, and a growing local population had put its facilities under pressure. ARCO partnered with the Ministry of Education's Capital Works team on a major upgrade, winning the work through competitive tender and adding value through construction methodology, programming and value engineering to align costs with budget.
The project delivered a new two-storey, 1,100m² classroom block with six open-plan teaching spaces, two kitchen and art areas and a toilet block, built on timber piles with supporting retaining walls. ARCO also demolished two existing classroom blocks, relocated another with new decks and ramps, and built two reinforced concrete hard courts.
